DALE WILLIAMS (NZ)

DALE WILLIAMS (NZ)

City Councillor - Porirua City New Zealand

About

‘Zero Waste of Youth’.

After less than outstanding educational achievement, Dale left secondary school to serve an apprenticeship in the New Zealand Motor Industry. As a very proud Trade Certified Motorcycle Engineer by profession, Dale began his first franchised business in Otorohanga aged 23 years old, owning several successful dealerships during 19 years in the industry.
In 1995 he was elected to the Otorohanga District Council, and went on to become Mayor of Otorohanga in 2004, serving 3 terms and being re- elected unopposed. During this time Dale created Community led initiatives to support young people as they transitioned from education to work, achieving full youth employment and a vibrant local economy.
Dale then chaired the New Zealand Mayors Taskforce for Jobs and developed a Youth to Work Strategy based on the Otorohanga experience, for all communities to share.
Now living in Porirua City, in the Wellington region where he is an elected City Councillor, Dale is an enthusiastic, inspirational and entertaining commentator on the challenges and opportunities of ‘Young people, Transitions and Jobs’,  ‘Community Ownership and Leadership’ and the ‘Zero Waste of Youth’.
Nominated as New Zealander of the year, communicator of the year.

Dales talk

A motorcycle journey to mayorship

A journey of experiences, through a life of community service, leadership, practical solutions for local issues, and results that matter.
My passion is encouraging greater Community Ownership and Leadership to overcome the severe skills and labour shortages New Zealand  faces.
Education and industry are disconnected, yet both have the solutions to the others challenges. The greatest risk of young people not transitioning successfully from school to work, is to the Community and its future sustainability.
I am committed to working with communities and their leaders, educators, training providers, government agencies, industry, employers and young people, to offer and share information, experience, and options, wrapped in a layer of urgency and delivered in an engaging, provocative and entertaining way!
